The brick material is generally a mixture of clay minerals and non-clay minerals, and there must be a or several clay minerals in the mixture. Thus the clay minerals are the must-have part for sintered brick making. Especially in the production of high porosity hollow bricks, clay mineral content shall be above 35%.

Clay mineral is a mixture of various fine mineral (hydrous aluminum silicate minerals mainly) with particle sizes generally less than the 0.02mm. Raw clay minerals for vacuum brick are mainly illite, sericite, chlorite, kaolinite, fire clay and montmorillonite. As the performance requirements of products, it would be better containing more fire clay and illite in raw material. The plasticity of montmorillonite is good, but it has very fine particles, large surface area, if not add other clay minerals at the same time, it will greatly improve the drying sensitivity coefficients of raw materials, so the montmorillonite content is generally controlled below 3%. The clay is mainly composed of montmorillonite are called expansive soil.
